Professor Mónica Domínguez Torres delivered "Imperial Gems: The Art, Ecology and Politics of Pearls in Habsburg Spain" at the Getty Research Institute on Nov. 11. Focused on Caribbean pearls owned by the Monarchy of Spain, the lecture examined meanings associated with the gems among the royals in relation to contemporary pearl exploitation methods. Domínguez Torres is currently in residence at the institute as part of the Art and Ecology program.
