Professor Vimalin Rujivacharakul interviews Murray Fraser, general editor of the 21st edition of Sir Banister Fletcher's Global History of Architecture, in her article "Redefining the Globe: An Interview with Murray Fraser on Architectural History for the 21st Century" published in Architectural Histories, the open access journal of the European Architectural History Network. Originally printed over 124 years ago, Banister Fletcher now covers five-and-a-half millennia of architectural history. Fraser, Professor of Architecture and Global Culture at the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London, widened the text's original Eurocentric lens, providing a more global focus in the latest edition.
"Seeking not to give predominance to any single part of the world, we began each time period in the 'Fertile Crescent' of the Near Middle East as a convenient marker, and then spiralled out in the same manner each time across the globe so as to take in every inhabited zone," Fraser said in the interview.
