News Van Horn wins Director’s Essay Prize

​Professor Jennifer Van Horn will receive the Director's Essay Prize at the National Portrait Gallery on Friday, Sept. 6 at 4 p.m. She will present her award-winning article, "'The Dark Iconoclast': African Americans' Artistic Resistance in the Civil War South." Published in The Art Bulletin, Van Horn's essay explores iconoclastic acts of enslaved and freed people against the portraits of those who oppressed them during the American Civil War. To attend the lecture and ceremony, reserve free tickets in advance.
