Biography
Elizabeth Humphrey is a Ph.D. student studying the art and material culture of North America the long-19th century, with a particular focus on free and enslaved Black and Indigenous peoples. Her research often explores the Atlantic world, specifically by examining non-Euro American art histories and material culture. She received her B.A. in Art History and Visual Arts from Bowdoin College (2014) and her M.A. in American Material Culture from the Winterthur Program in American Material Culture (2019), where her thesis examined the influence of Moorish revival and Alhambresque architecture in the American Midwest. Elizabeth has held internship and volunteer experiences at the National Museum of African American History and Culture and the Hirshhorn Museum, respectively. Elizabeth was previously the Curatorial Assistant and Manager of Student Programs at the Bowdoin College Museum of Art. There, she worked on several exhibitions and curated There Is a Woman in Every Color: Black Women in Art, which will travel to several venues between 2022-2023.
