Michael Hartman is a Ph.D. student interested in the historical constructs of gender identity, race, and sexuality within the globalized context of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century American art. Michael received his B.A. in Art History and German at the University of Arkansas (2013) and M.A. from the Williams College Graduate Program in the History of Art (2018) where his qualifying paper examined the racial confluence between Italians and Native Americans in Albert Bierstadt's figure studies. While at Williams, Michael served as the Curatorial Intern for Prints, Drawings, and Photographs at the Clark Art Institute, where he curated Extreme Nature!, a forty work exhibition examining natural disaster and the influence of popular science on artists working in nineteenth century.
