Ph.D. candidate Sarah Mead Leonard has been named a Junior Fellow in Garden and Landscape Studies at Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection. During her time as a Junior Fellow, Leonard will work on her dissertation. Titled "'The Beauty of the Bough-Hung Banks': William Morris in the Thames Landscape," Leonard explains that her dissertation "melds art history and landscape studies methodologies to explore Morris's lifelong relationship with the River Thames and its tributaries. It examines both the influence of those river landscapes on Morris's life and works, and the effect Morris had on the rivers as both as preservationist and a polluter."

In advance of the 2018 North American Victorian Studies Association conference, Leonard will also be preparing a paper on Morris' connections with the Indian indigo trade and a discussion session on the potential uses of landscape research and fieldwork in Victorian studies.

She will be in residence at Dumbarton Oaks from early September until early May and hopes to connect with other UD art history students and alums while there.
