Mounce presents at Historicising Masculinities conference

On July 2, doctoral candidate Kiersten Mounce will present at the international conference Historicising Masculinities at Newcastle University (UK). Her paper, "The Men of L'Union des Artistes Modernes: The Productivity of a Specific Homosociality Across the Twentieth Century," investigates the impact of male bonds within the U.A.M. on design in interwar France and its historiography. She does so by examining the physical record of these relationships--their objects, exhibitions, journal publications, private communication, and personal collections--and interpreting them as the products of homosocial bonds within a specific hegemonic masculinity. This framework explains why and how a group of men could adhere to dominant gender norms deeply connected to expressions of nationalism despite their colonial and feminine ties.
