Biography
A PhD candidate, Erin’s dissertation, “Accident and Fortuna in seventeenth-century Italian Art,” seeks to establish chance, which has previously only been considered a significant artistic medium in modernism, as a creative force that Baroque artists confronted and harnessed. While at the University of Delaware, Erin has received the Outstanding Achievement in Graduate Studies Award and the Anna R. and Robert T. Silver Award for excellence in teaching. In Winter 2021, Erin taught a course on the Italian Renaissance and in Spring 2023, Erin will teach Seventeenth-Century European Art. Erin is invested in teaching that prioritizes cultural empathy, close engagement with art objects, and critical assessment of visual and textual sources. She served as a graduate representative on the department ARTH Introductory Sequence Committee, which convened to reassess the format and goals of the survey sequence, and has developed public and undergraduate gallery programs at the Hispanic Society, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Cleveland Museum of Art.
Current Research Projects
Erin is currently writing her dissertation on chance and Fortuna in 17th-century Italian art. She is also working on an essay that identifies references to the ancient anecdote of Protogenes’ sponge in several 17th-century paintings, including Caravaggio’s Conversion of St. Paul.
