Professor Jessica L. Horton has been awarded a 2018 Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Arts Writers Book Grant to support research and writing for her upcoming book, "Earth Diplomacy: Indigenous American Art and Reciprocity, 1953-1973." The book examines how artists revitalized longstanding Indigenous cultures of diplomacy in the unlikely shape of US-sponsored Cold War tours. The book will foreground the creative translation of Indigenous political ecologies across two decades and four continents, into a system of international relations that was otherwise premised upon their externalization and exploitation.
The Arts Writers Grants come from a collaboration between Creative Capital and the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. The program supports writing about contemporary art and aims to ensure that critical writing remains a valued mode of engaging the visual arts.
